A family goal of ours this year is to give back more. We always donated our things, make sure the kids do things for Grandma and Grandpa when they are sick and things like that, but this year I wanted to expand it.
We started by giving the men who pick up our trash and our mail man some hot cocoa the week of Christmas.
Next I ran across a status on Facebook that was a project for the students of Sandy Hook Elementary School (the school that had the shooting in December). They wanted to turn the student’s new school into a winter wonderland for their arrival and had info on where to send in your snowflakes. I had been trying to think of something to do with the snowflakes that our elf Chippey had made for us and thought that this was perfect!
So we sent our snowflakes on their way. I didn't go into the exact reason why we did this, I just told the kids we sent them to make some kids very happy.
Today Austin and I came home from dropping Kelly off at school and made cookies to take to the fire station.
Austin was ready to go as soon as the cookies were done, but we had to wait for Kelly to get off of school. The firefighters were so nice and spent some time talking with the kids about their favorite characters. As soon as we got in the truck they wanted to do more! That was a great Mommy moment and the best reaction I could have hoped for from them. We will have to make some more cookies and visit the other fire station with Daddy! I have more ideas for the near future and I am so glad that we have started this! I hope that this has inspired you to go out and do something for someone too!
